[윤희영의 News English] 비행기 승무원들의 은밀한 암호

여객기 승무원(flight attendant)들은 하늘의 천사로 불릴 만큼 마냥 상냥하고 자상하다(be friendly and attentive). 그런 그들도 시쳇말로(as they say) '진상'인 승객을 마주하다 보면 화가 치민다고(fly into a rage) 한다. 가장 짜증 나게 하는(annoy them most) 경우는 승무원이 통제할 수 없는 것들에 대해 항의를 해대는(constantly complain about things that are out of their control) 승객이다. 기체 점검 지연이나 날씨 문제(maintenance delay or weather issue) 등은 어찌할 도리가 없는데도 마치 승무원들 탓인 양 막무가내로 몰아붙인다(obstinately lash out at them). 하인 다루듯이 무례한 것은 둘째 치고(let alone being discourteous) 지나갈 때 주의를 끌기 위해 몸에 손을 대는(touch them to get their attention) 것도 질색이다(be abhorrent to their feelings). 그러면 성격 고약한(have a nasty temper) 승무원은 승객의 말은 듣는 둥 마는 둥 "금방 다시 올게요(I will be right back)" 하고는 가버린다. "꼴 보기 싫다"는 말이다. 물론 금방 오지 않는다. 승객들 시중드는 데 이골이 나서(be well acquainted with attending to passengers' wants) 잔꾀 부리는(play cheap tricks) 승무원은 기내 한쪽 끝에서 다른 끝으로 가는 동안 승객들의 질문이나 요구를 피하기 위해 술책을 쓰기도(come up with tactics to avoid their questions and demands) 한다. 고무장갑을 끼고(put a rubber glove on) 비어 있는 토사물 봉지를 들고 지나가면(walk through the cabin holding an empty sick bag) 어느 승객도 말을 걸지 않는다고 한다. 승객들이 알아듣지 못하도록 은어를 사용한다는(talk jargon) 사실은 소개한 적이 있다. 안전벨트가 제대로 채워져 있는지(be properly fastened) 기내를 걸어가며(walk down the cabin) 좌우를 살피는 것은 'Groin Scan(사타구니 스캔)' 또는 'Crotch Watch(가랑이 관찰)'라고 한다. 'Crop Dusting'은 원래 비행기로 농약을 살포하는(spray agricultural pesticides) '항공 방제'의 뜻인데, 방귀를 참을(hold in their fart) 수 없을 때 통로를 따라가며(stroll down the aisle) 골고루 살포하는(distribute it evenly) 행위를 말한다. 매력적인 탑승객이 있다고 가리키며 힐끔댈(point out and steal a glance at attractive passengers on board) 때는 암호를 쓴다(u se secret codes). 가령 "I'll spend seven days in America"라고 말하면 '7번 줄 A좌석 승객이 멋있다, 예쁘다'고 알리는 신호다.
